The Gospel
Gospel means good news. The Good News is that Jesus was the Almighty God Incarnate, lived a sinless life, died willingly in sacrifice for our sins, was resurrected on the third day, appeared to the disciples, ascended into Heaven after 40 days on Earth after resurrection, and offers salvation to those who believe in Him and repent from their sinful lives.
It has been my belief that one must understand what all the above means before one can say “I believe” and pray a sinner’s prayer to be saved. You must understand what it is you are believing!
I’ve recently read a couple of good articles on these subjects, and refer to them here in order of the topics in the title above:
The Gospel Page on Born-Again-Christian-Info
The Gospel Page on BlessedQuietness
The Salvation Page on Born-Again-Christian-Info
The Repentance Page on Born-Again-Christian-Info
Once you understand, by all means do pray!
The Sinner’s Prayer Page on Born-Again-Christian-Info
Both sites recommend reading the Gospel According to John. I do too. If your heart is open to believe, it will tell you what you need to know.
On a side note, the Gospel of John is also good to go back and read often. It is profound on many levels. It is amazing how the same literature can provide the “basic Truth” when one is seeking to know the Lord in the beginning, and how it also provides “deep Truth” to those who are seeking to understand their relationship with Him better.
In case you don’t have a bible handy, here are some links:

The Gospel According to John (NASB)
The Gospel According to John (KJV)
Finally, this page has some good points not only on the process of salvation, but also presents the aspects of the Lord’s grace that you receive and steps to take to become the Lord’s disciple:
It is my prayer that if you do not know the Lord or if you doubt your salvation that this post will bring you to Him…
Peace!
